Happy New Year, May We Be Closer This Year To A Better World

“Our people aren't any better than other peoples. Their historic greatness is derived from the singular fact of having been put to the test and having been able to withstand it. It's not a great people in and of itself, but rather a people, which has made itself great, and its capacity to do so is born out of the greatness of the ideas and the righteousness of the causes it defends. There are no other causes like these, and there have never been. Today it's not a matter of selfishly defending a national cause; in today's world an exclusively national cause cannot be a great cause in and of itself; our world, as a consequence of its own development and historical evolution, is globalizing quickly, unhaltingly and irreversibly. Without abandoning national and cultural identities and even the legitimate interests of the peoples of each country, no cause is more important than global causes, that is, the cause of humanity itself.” – Fidel Castro, January 1, 1999, speech on the 40th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution

Fidel’s words, spoken 15 years ago and referring to 40 years previous, are as relevant today as they have been at any time during the last 55 years of the Cuban Revolution. It is in their spirit that for the last 9 years Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) has organized its annual New Year’s Eve celebration of the Cuban Revolution. Just like Cuba, the celebration shows no signs of slowing down, with this year being the most diverse, most exciting, and biggest yet with over 250 people participating.

The evening opened with MC and VCSC Coordinator Tamara Hansen summarizing the proceedings which 55 years ago led up to the hasty departure of US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista and his henchmen on January 1, 1959. They had realized their impending defeat by the revolutionary Rebel Army led by Fidel Castro, and this became the first New Year’s Eve that the masses of Cuban people celebrated the victory of Cuba’s Revolution.

The program began with the locally made documentary “Sin Embargo” by Emily Harrison which summarizes the roots of the Cuban Revolution as well as the continuing resilience and brilliance of the Cuban people in the face of the ongoing US blockade and aggression. This was followed by an introduction by VCSC executive member Colleen Glynn, who invited everyone interested or inspired by the Cuban Revolution to get involved in VCSC’s ongoing work!

By this time every chair and table had been taken as more people streamed in and organizers rushed to put out more chairs. From floor to ceiling the hall was covered in historical photos of the Cuban Revolution, and they were mixed with banners for ongoing dynamic campaigns and lights and colours from every corner.

The event received a very special message from the Cuban Ambassador to Canada, Julio Garmendía Peña, who sent greetings from the Cuban Embassy in Ottawa. He warmly thanked VCSC and those attending for their continuing solidarity and friendship with Cuba, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Cuban people to their principles and Revolution.

Julio was followed by Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver Coordinators Alison and Azza, who emphasized the importance of working for the freedom of the Cuban 5 Heroes imprisoned in the United States for exposing U.S. backed terrorist organizations which have been attacking Cuba since 1959. Although René González completed his sentence and returned to Cuba this year, Gerardo, Antonio, Ramon, and Fernando are still locked away in US jails. Alison and Azza also presented an exciting new music video for the “Yellow Ribbon” campaign for the Cuban 5, which was initiated by Rene Gonzalez and has raised the profile of the case around the world.

FMLN-Vancouver organizer and amazing musician Maria Melendez took the stage next. She spoke of the importance of the example of the Cuban Revolution in Latin-America before playing a powerful set of soulful songs from the history of their struggles.

VCSC Executive member Thomas Davies also showed a short slideshow documenting last year’s Ernesto Che Guevara Volunteer Work Brigade to Cuba. In 10 slides and 10 minutes he summarized the Che Brigade’s mandate of, “Volunteering, Solidarity, Education and Fun!” and encouraged people to come again on the amazing annual adventure. All proceeds from the New Year’s Eve celebration this year will go towards helping young people volunteer in Cuba.

The evening was moving along quickly as MX Katracho took to the stage for a passionate performance of “Ranchero” classics. He was followed by local rapper and Cuba supporter Joose Justis. Joose had the audience chanting and clapping as the live music portion of the evening ended on multiple high notes.

Last year’s hit, DJ 100Fuegos soon had the room moving as families, friends, the younger, the older, and people from around the world came together and move to the distinct rhythm of the Cuban Revolution and enjoy each other’s company.

They also enjoyed the special Cuban cocktails and delicious assortment of food available. The El Salvadorean pupusas, Venezuelan Tequeños and Middle Eastern Tabouleh salad were all popular and kept the kitchen and bar staff busy all night.

New this year and very popular was a Cuban photo booth. Families and friends came together for photos with an exciting Cuban backdrop and some surprise props.

Celebrating the New Year is a special time for people around the world. Celebrating with over 11 million Cubans and millions more internationally who understand that humanity is connected and the Cuban Revolution is an example for a better future makes it that much more special. It would have been difficult to fit anyone else on the dance floor as the clock struck midnight, balloons dropped from the ceiling, and people shouted, “Viva Cuba! Viva la Revolución!” between hugs with old and new friends.

The dancing and the sharing continued well into the night, and as usual, when the lights came on there were many who did not want to leave, and even stayed into the early morning helping to pack-up and clean the hall. Before all of that however, some very happy people won some very special Cuban prizes from the raffle draw.

The final words of 2013 and the first of 2014 will go to Cuban President Raúl Castro, who was one of “those dreamers” who accompanied Fidel through the most difficult periods before the January 1, 1959, and through all the gains and immense challenges in the over half a decade which has followed. Against all the odds, the U.S. blockade, the sabotage, and the slander, the Cuban Revolution has not only survived, it has moved forward, and continues to educate and inspire those with a desire for justice and dignity for everybody. VCSC will continue to take this message of love and determination as we continue to move forward and organize in the New Year!

Celebramos a Cuba y celebramos con Cuba
Feliz año nuevo, y que este año sea más cercano a un mundo mejor

No se trata de un gran pueblo de por sí, sino de un pueblo engrandecido por sí mismo, y su capacidad de hacerlo nace de la grandeza de las ideas y la justeza de las causas que defiende. No hay otras iguales; no las ha habido jamás. No se trata hoy de defender con egoísmo una causa nacional; una causa exclusivamente nacional en el mundo de hoy, no puede ser por sí sola una gran causa; nuestro mundo, como consecuencia de su propio desarrollo y evolución histórica, se globaliza de manera rápida, incontenible e irreversible. Las palabras de Fidel, dichas hace 15 años, refiriéndose a los 40 anteriores, son tan vigentes hoy como lo han sido en cualquier momento de los últimos 55 años de la Revolución Cubana. Es en su espíritu que las Comunidades de Vancouver en Solidaridad con Cuba (VCSC: Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba) han organizado su celebración anual de fin de año por la Revolución Cubana. Al igual que en Cuba, la celebración no da muestras de menguar, pues este año ha sido la más diversa, más emocionante y más grande, con más de 250 participantes.

La noche inició con la Maestra de Ceremonias y Coordinadora de VCSC Tamara Hansen haciendo un sumario sobre los hechos que hace 55 años llevaron a la huída del dictador Fulgencio Batista (apoyado por Estados Unidos) y sus esbirros el 1 de enero de 1959. Se habían percatado de su inminente derrota a manos del revolucionario Ejército Rebelde, encabezado por Fidel Castro, y esta es la víspera de fin de año en la que las masas de pueblo cubano celebraron la victoria de la Revolución Cubana.

El programa inició con el documental local “Sin Embargo”, de Emily Harrison, el cual resume las raíces de la Revolución Cubana igual que la continua resistencia y brillantez del pueblo cubano ante la constante agresión y bloqueo de Estados Unidos. Esto fue seguido por una introducción hecha por la miembro ejecutivo de VCSC Colleen Glynn, quien invitó a todos los interesados o inspirados por la Revolución Cubana a involucrarse en el constante trabajo de VCSC.

Para este momento, cada silla y mesa estaba ya tomada, pues más personas entraron y los organizadores salieron a buscar más sillas. Desde el suelo hasta el techo el salón estaba cubierto con fotos históricas de la Revolución Cubana, y estaban mezcladas además con carteles de campañas en ejecución y luces y colores desde cada rincón.

El evento recibió un mensaje especial de parte del Embajador de Cuba en Canadá, Julio Garmendía Peña, quien envió los saludos desde la Embajada Cubana en Ottawa. Cálidamente agradeció a VCSC y a todos los que asistieron por su continua solidaridad y amistad con Cuba, y reafirmó el compromiso del pueblo cubano a sus principios y su Revolución.

A Julio le siguieron las Coordinadoras del Comité de Vancouver por la Liberación de los Cinco Alison y Azza, quienes enfatizaron en la importancia de trabajar por la liberación de los Cinco Héroes Cubanos presos en Estados Unidos por exponer organizaciones terroristas apoyadas por Estados Unidos, las que han estado atacando a Cuba desde 1959. Aunque René González completó su sentencia y regresó a Cuba este año, Gerardo, Antonio, Ramón y Fernando aún están encerrados en cárceles norteamericanas. Alison y Azza también presentaron un emocionante nuevo video musical por la campaña de las “Cintas Amarillas” a favor de los Cinco, la cual fue iniciada por René González y elevó el perfil del caso por todo el mundo.

La organizadora del FMLN de Vancouver y excelente música María Meléndez, tomó el escenario a continuación. Ella habló sobre la importancia del ejemplo de la Revolución Cubana en América Latina antes de reproducir un poderoso grupo de canciones sobre la historia de sus luchas.

El miembro ejecutivo de VCSC Thomas Davies también mostró un pequeño pase de diapositivas que documentaba a la Brigada Ernesto Che Guevara de Trabajo Voluntario a Cuba el pasado año. En 10 diapositivas y 10 minutos, resumió el mandato de la Brigada Che Guevara de “¡Por ser voluntarios, la solidaridad, la educación y la diversión!” y animó a las personas a que regresaran nuevamente a esta increíble aventura anual. Todo lo que se gane de la celebración de este fin de año, estará destinado a ayudar a jóvenes que sean voluntarios en Cuba.

La noche avanzó rápidamente, cuando MX Katracho tomó el escenario para una apasionante demostración de clásicos Rancheros. Fue seguido por el rapero local y simpatizante con Cuba Joose Justis. Joose mantuvo a la audiencia cantando y aplaudiendo mientras la parte de música en vivo de la noche terminaba con múltiples notas altas.

El hit del año pasado, DJ 100Fuegos tuvo a la habitación moviéndose a media que familias, amigos, jóvenes, viejos y gente de todo el mundo se unieron y se movieron al compás del distintivo ritmo de la Revolución Cubana y disfrutaron la compañía los unos de los otros.

También disfrutaron de especiales cocteles cubanos y deliciosas selecciones de comida disponibles. Los pupusas salvadoreños, los tequeños venezolanos y las ensaladas Tebouleh del Medio Oriente fueron populares y mantuvieron al personal de la cocina y el bar ocupados toda la noche.

Nuevo este año y muy popular resultó la cabina de fotos cubana. Familiares y amigos se unieron para fotos con emocionantes fondos cubanos y algunas propiedades de sorprsa.

Celebrar el nuevo año es un momento especial para las personas en todo el mundo. Celebrarlo con más de 11 millones de cubanos y millones de personas internacionalmente que entienden que la humanidad está conectada y que la Revolución Cubana es un ejemplo de un mundo mejor lo hace aún más especial. Habría sido difícil que todos cupieran en la pista de baile cuando el reloj dio la medianoche, los globos cayeron del techo y la gente gritó “¡Viva Cuba! ¡Viva la Revolución!” entre abrazos con viejos y nuevos amigos.

El baile y la socialización continuaron hasta bien entrada la madrugada, y como es usual, cuando llegó el día, había muchos que no querían irse, e incluso se quedaron hasta la mañana, ayudando a empacar y limpiar el salón. Antes de todo eso, sin embargo, muchas personas muy felices ganaron algunos premios especiales de Cuba de la rifa.

Las últimas palabras de 2013 y las primeras de 2014 van al Presidente Cubano Raúl Castro, quien era uno de “esos soñadores” que acompañaron a Fidel a través de los más difíciles períodos antes del 1 de enero de 1959, y a través de los logros e inmensos retos en la más de media década que siguió. Contra todos los pronósticos, el bloqueo norteamericano, el sabotaje, las calumnias, la Revolución Cubana no solo ha sobrevivido, sino que también ha avanzado y continúa educando e inspirando a aquellos que piden justicia y dignidad para todos. ¡Las VCSC continuará llevando este mensaje de amor y determinación y continuaremos avanzando y organizándonos en el Nuevo Año!
