Vancouver, Canada commemorates the 59th anniversary of the
birth of Comandante Hugo Chávez




July 28th, 2013 marked the 59th anniversary of the birth of the Supreme Commander, the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías. On this day, Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) hosted a cultural evening to commemorate this visionary leader who devoted his life to humanity. The true impact of the legacy of Comandante Hugo Chávez could be seen in the room packed with people of all generations and backgrounds.

The celebration started with the projection of a section from the movie South of the Border by Oliver Stone. The movie interviews Comandante Hugo Chávez and shows some of the gains of the Bolivarian revolution.

Following the movie, Alison Bodine and Janine Solanki, organisers with Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC), spoke in honor of the life of Comandante Hugo Chávez. Alison talked about the gains of the Bolivarian revolution such as the social and education missions that have helped to provide a dignified life to the poor and working class of Venezuela.

Janine spoke about the close ties of friendship and solidarity between Cuba and Venezuela, from its roots in the ideas of Simon Bolivar and Jose Marti to its practical implementation today with the example of Cuban doctors working to bring adequate health care services to poor and rural areas in Venezuela.

Speaking next were, Gisela Lara and Maria Stella, First Consuls at the Consulate General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Vancouver, spoke about the importance of the Legacy of Comandante Chávez for the Venezuelan people and people of the world.

Looking toward the legacy of Comandante Hugo Chávez, his deep impact could be seen clearly in the letters and statements written following his death just over four months ago. Mike, Janine and Azza, organisers with Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba (VCSC) read some of those letters including a letter from Comandante Fidel Castro, the leader of the Cuban Revolution, a letter from René González, one of the 5 Cuban heroes unjustly imprisoned in U.S jails, and a letter from Maria Gabriela Chávez, daughter of the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chávez.

The audience was then treated to two talented musical performances, Noah Fine with his music of love and revolution and MX Katracho with his powerful Latin American songs.

Following the musical tribute, participants at the event had the chance to speak about what Comandante Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian revolution have meant to them and reiterate their solidarity with Venezuela and its current President Nicolás Maduro.

The evening wrapped up with everyone joining together to blow out the candles and enjoy the delicious cake in commemoration of the 59th anniversary of the birth of Comandante Hugo Chávez.

El 28 de Julio de 2013 marcó el 59 aniversario del nacimiento del Comandante Supremo, el líder dela Revolución Bolivariana en Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías. Este día, las Comunidades de Vancouver en Solidaridad con Cuba (VCSC: Vancouver Communities in Solidarity with Cuba) celebraron una velada cultural para conmemorar a este líder visionario que dedicó su vida a la humanidad. El verdadero impacto del legado del Comandante Hugo Chávez pudo verse en esa habitación llena de gente de todas las generaciones y orígenes.

La celebración comenzó con la proyección de una sección del filme Al Sur de la Frontera (South of the Border) de Oliver Stone. En la película se entrevista al Comandante Hugo Chávez y muestra algunos de los logros de la Revolución Bolivariana.

Luego de la película, Alison Bodine y Janine Solanki, organizadoras en VCSC, hablaron en honor a la vida de Hugo Chávez. Alison habló sobre los logros de la Revolución Bolivariana, tales como las misiones sociales y de educación que han ayudado a brindar una vida digna a las clases pobres y trabajadoras en Venezuela.

Janine habló acerca de los fuertes lazos de amistad y solidaridad entre Cuba y Venezuela, desde sus raíces en las ideas de Simón Bolívar y José Martí, hasta su implementación práctica hoy día con el ejemplo de los médicos cubanos trabajando para brindar unos servicios de salud adecuados a las áreas pobres y rurales en Venezuela.

A seguidas, hablaron Gisela Lara y María Stella, primeras cónsules en el Consulado General de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela en Vancouver, quienes mencionaron la importancia del legado del Comandante Chávez para el pueblo venezolano y los pueblos del mundo.

Mirando el legado del Comandante Hugo Chávez, su profundo impacto podía verse claramente en las cartas y declaraciones escritas luego de su muerte hace apenas cuatro meses. Mike, Janine y Azza, organizadores en VCSC, leyeron algunas de esas cartas incluyendo una del Comandante Fidel Castro, el líder de la Revolución Cubana, una carta de René González, uno de los Cinco Héroes Cubanos presos injustamente en cárceles de Estados Unidos, y una carta de María Gabriela Chávez, hija del líder de la Revolución Bolivariana, Hugo Chávez.

La audiencia fue invitada a dos actuaciones musicales muy talentosas: Noah Fine, con su música de amor y revolución y MX Katracho, con sus poderosas canciones latinoamericanas.

Luego del tributo musical, los participantes en el evento tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar acerca de lo que han significado para ellos el Comandante Hugo Chávez y la Revolución Bolivariana, y reiterar su solidaridad con el actual Presidente Nicolás Maduro.

La noche cerró cuando todos se unieron para soplar velas y disfrutar un delicioso pastel en conmemoración del 59 aniversario del nacimiento del Comandante Hugo Chávez.
